The S.K.Acharya Institute of Law (SKAIL) was founded by the Sikkim Bengal Educational Trust (SBET) in 2004, located on the campus of the University of Kalyani. This prestigious institute is dedicated to the memory of the late Snehangshu Kanta Acharya, a distinguished Bar-at-Law and a revered figure in Bengal for his significant contributions to law and philanthropy. To be eligible for admission to the B.A.LL.B. (Honours) program, a candidate must meet the following criteria:

(a) The candidate must have successfully passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) examination or its equivalent, securing a minimum aggregate of 45% marks for the General Category and 40% for candidates belonging to the SC/ST and OBC Categories. Applicants who are awaiting the results of their Higher Secondary (10+2) or equivalent examinations in the current year are eligible to participate in the selection process and may be granted provisional admission.

(b) The candidate must not be older than 20 years as of July 1st of the admission year, or as stipulated by the Bar Council of India for the respective academic session. A relaxation of two years in the age limit is provided to candidates from the SC/ST categories, in accordance with the Bar Council of India rules, 2008. In exceptional and meritorious cases, the upper age limit may be relaxed at the discretion of the Director in Kolkata.

SKAIL Number of Seats and Reservation

The B.A.LL.B. (Honours) degree program typically offers a total of 120 (One Hundred Twenty) seats, divided into two sections. The seats allocated under the management quota are limited to no more than 10% of the total available seats.

Snehangshu Kanta Acharya Institute of Law Course Fees

The fee structure for the B.A.LL.B (Honors) degree program at S.K. Acharya Institute of Law (SKAIL) is detailed as follows:

Tuition Fee: Rs. 30,000.00 (Rupees Thirty Thousand) per academic year, which breaks down to Rs. 15,000.00 per semester. This fee does not include examination fees and other fees payable to the University.

Security Deposit: A one-time security deposit of Rs.10,000 (Rupees Ten Thousand) is required at the time of admission. Out of this, Rs.5,000 will be refunded at the end of the course.

University Registration Fee: Starting from the academic session 2010 – 11, an additional 10% of the total course fees for 5 years is payable to the university by the students at the time of admission as a university registration fee.

Examination Fee: From the academic session 2014-2015, an examination fee of Rs. 1,000 (Rupees One Thousand) per semester is payable to SKAIL before the submission of examination forms. Failure to pay this fee may result in the student being debarred from appearing in the University Semester examinations.

  • The fee payment is required in full at the beginning of each academic session.
  • However, with the permission of the registrar of SKAIL and for valid reasons, a student may opt to pay the fees in three installments within 90 days from the date of the first installment, with the first installment due at the start of each semester. 
  • A late fee of Rs. 10 per day is applicable if the fee is not paid within a week after the semester begins, up to a maximum of 30 days from the start of the semester. 
  • If the fee remains unpaid after this period, the student's enrollment may be canceled, requiring re-admission with a fee of Rs. 1,000 and a satisfactory academic and conduct report from the Faculty Committee.

When applying to the B.A.LL.B.(Honours) degree program, applicants must ensure they include attested photocopies of specific documents with their application form for verification and record purposes. These documents are critical for the assessment of the application and must be submitted as per the requirements outlined by the institution. Below is a summary of the documents required:

Mark Sheet of the Higher Secondary (10+2) or Equivalent Examination: This is necessary to verify the academic qualifications of the candidate. Applicants who are waiting for their results at the time of application must indicate this status appropriately in the application form.

Proof of Age: This can be provided through a Birth Certificate or an Admit Card/School Certificate that mentions the date of birth. This document is required to verify that the candidate meets the age criteria set by the institution and the Bar Council of India.

SC/ST/OBC Certificate: Applicants claiming reservation benefits under the SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), or OBC (Other Backward Classes) categories must submit relevant certificates to prove their eligibility. These documents are crucial for availing of reservation benefits and fee concessions, where applicable.

Recent Passport Size Color Photographs: One photograph should be pasted on the application form, and two additional copies must be submitted along with the form. These photographs are used for identification purposes throughout the admission process and for official records.

SKAIL Admission Procedure 

Admission to the B.A.LL.B. (Honours) Degree Programme at SKAIL is determined based on the marks obtained in the 10+2 examination conducted by State Boards, Central Board, or any internationally recognized 12th standard examination. Given the limited availability of seats, capped at 120 and divided into two sections, admissions are granted strictly on a first-come, first-served basis according to the marks obtained.

  • Candidates who are selected for admission will be personally notified via telephone, letter, fax, or email. 
  • Selected candidates are required to attend a counseling session at the SKAIL campus in Kalyani on a specified date. 
  • The purpose of the counseling session is for the faculty to assess the candidates' suitability for the programme. 
  • During counseling, candidates must present all original certificates for verification. Admission is granted upon the payment of course fees and other applicable fees.

Candidates also have the option to secure provisional admission immediately after completing their 12th standard exams, which will be confirmed upon submission of the final mark sheet from the respective State or Central Board. Should any seats remain vacant after the initial admission process, candidates on the waiting list will be contacted in the order of their position on the list and invited for counseling on a later date.
