Jharkhand launches Widow Remarriage Incentive Scheme

The 'Vidhwa Punarvivah Protsahan Yojana' introduced by Jharkhand is a pioneering social welfare scheme aimed at encouraging and supporting widowed women who choose to remarry. Launched by Chief Minister Champai Soren on March 6, 2024, this initiative is the first of its kind in India and offers a financial incentive of Rs. 2 lakh to eligible women. The program addresses not only the financial but also the social challenges faced by widowed women, promoting a shift towards more progressive attitudes regarding their remarriage.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To qualify for this scheme, applicants must meet specific criteria:
  • They must be of legal age to marry.
  • They should not be employed by the government, be receiving a pension, or be liable to pay income tax.
  • The incentive application must be filed within a year of remarriage.
  • A death certificate for the late husband is required.
  • Empowering Women and Changing Social Perceptions

This scheme represents a significant step towards empowering widowed women, who often find themselves in vulnerable situations following their spouse's death. It aims to provide them with financial support and a foundation to rebuild their lives, while also challenging and changing societal norms that have traditionally stigmatized widow remarriage. By setting a precedent, it encourages other states to adopt similar measures to support and uplift women in need.

Distribution of Funds and Additional Announcements

At the launch event, Chief Minister Champai Soren awarded Rs. 14 lakh in total to seven beneficiaries, marking the scheme's commencement. Further, he announced an increase in the monthly honorarium for Anganwadi workers to Rs. 9,500 and for helpers to Rs. 4,750. Additionally, the first installment of an old age pension was transferred to 1,58,218 recipients, reflecting the government's broader commitment to supporting vulnerable populations.

Application Process and Documentation

Widows eligible for the scheme must apply within a year following their remarriage and submit the necessary documents, including their late husband's death certificate. This ensures that the process is streamlined and that the aid reaches those who need it most, although it excludes government employees, pensioners, and income taxpayers from eligibility, focusing the assistance on those likely in greater need of financial support.
