UPSC IES/ ISS Age Limit

  • Minimum Age: 21 years. This means that candidates need to have reached their 21st birthday on or before August 1, 2024.
  • Maximum Age: 30 years. Candidates should not have reached their 30th birthday by August 1, 2024.

UPSC IES/ ISS Exam Pattern

The UPSC IES/ISS examination scheme is designed to assess the candidate's understanding and proficiency in their respective fields, whether in economics for the Indian Economic Service (IES) or in statistics for the Indian Statistical Service (ISS). 

The examination shall be conducted according to the following plan—
  • Part I: Written examination carrying a maximum of 1000 marks in the subjects as shown below.
  • Part II: Viva voce of such candidates as may be called by the Commission carrying a maximum of 200 marks.

Part 1: Written Examination

Part I comprises the written examination, which is the first phase of the selection process, carrying a maximum of 1000 marks.

A. Indian Economic Service
  • General English: 100 marks, 3 hours
  • General Studies: 100 marks, 3 hours
  • General Economics-I: 200 marks, 3 hours
  • General Economics-II: 200 marks, 3 hours
  • General Economics-III: 200 marks, 3 hours
  • Indian Economics: 200 marks, 3 hours
B. Indian Statistical Service
  • General English: 100 marks, 3 hours
  • General Studies: 100 marks, 3 hours
  • Statistics-I (Objective): 200 marks, 2 hours
  • Statistics-II (Objective): 200 marks, 2 hours
  • Statistics-III (Descriptive): 200 marks, 3 hours
  • Statistics-IV (Descriptive): 200 marks, 3 hours

Notes for the Written Examination

  • Statistics I & II are objective type with 80 questions to be completed in 120 minutes.
  • Statistics III & IV are descriptive, with both short and long answer questions. In Statistics-IV, candidates must choose any two sections out of seven available, all carrying equal marks.
  • The General English and General Studies papers are subjective and common to both services.
  • All other papers for the Indian Economic Service are also subjective.

Part 2: Viva Voce

Candidates who pass the written examination may be called for a viva voce, which carries a maximum of 200 marks. This stage aims to assess the candidates' personality, suitability for public service, and their understanding of the subject matter.

UPSC IES / ISS Salary

The IES / ISS Officer Salary Structure for 2024, under the guidelines of the 7th Pay Commission, is a comprehensive package that includes a base pay range of ₹15,600 to ₹39,100, with a grade pay of ₹5,400. The total net pay starts at ₹21,000. Other financial benefits include:

  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): This is calculated at 30% of the net salary plus Dearness Allowance (DA), which comes to approximately ₹13,419.
  • Dearness Allowance (DA): Set at 113% of the net salary, adding up to ₹23,730.
  • Transport Allowance (TA): For class 1 cities, it's ₹6,600.
  • Combining these elements, the in-hand monthly salary for an IES Officer amounts to ₹64,749.

Additionally, IES Officers enjoy a tiered pay scale based on their level and tenure in service, starting from Junior Level with ₹5,400 grade pay up to the Cabinet Secretary level. Other than the salary, IES Officers receive various perks such as housing, an official vehicle, medical facilities, and allowances for education, travel, and more.
