About Midnapore Law College

Midnapore has long been known as an important center of learning in eastern India. During the period of the East India Company, efforts were made to introduce Western education in the region. In 1834, Midnapore Zilla School was established, which later expanded its academic programs. By 1873, the institution introduced the F.A. course and was upgraded to the status of a Second Grade College. Over the years, different courses such as law, science, and other programs were introduced or reorganized as educational needs changed.

In 1997, during the 125th anniversary celebration of Midnapore College, the Governing Body decided to establish a law college in the city. The Government of West Bengal granted permission in March 2000 to set up Midnapore Law College on a self-financing basis. The college was established under the leadership of Prof. Mukul Ranjan Ray.

Midnapore Law College received affiliation from Vidyasagar University and approval from the Bar Council of India to offer the 3-year LL.B and 5-year BA LL.B (Hons.) programs. The college started admitting students from the 2002–03 session and later moved to its own campus near Midnapore Railway Station.
