India Launches Adi Vaani: AI Translator for Tribal Languages

In a historic step towards inclusive digital empowerment, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs has unveiled the Beta version of Adi Vaani—India’s first AI-powered translator for tribal languages. The initiative marks a technological and cultural milestone, giving a voice to India’s indigenous communities while ensuring their participation in the nation’s digital future.

By combining artificial intelligence with cultural preservation, Adi Vaani not only addresses the risk of extinction facing several tribal languages but also creates a platform for education, governance, and public services to be accessible to tribal populations.

Preserving India’s Tribal Linguistic Wealth

India is home to 461 tribal languages and 71 mother tongues, each carrying centuries of oral traditions, folklore, and community identity. Yet, 81 tribal languages are listed as vulnerable and 42 as critically endangered due to declining intergenerational usage.

Adi Vaani acts as a digital lifeline to preserve this heritage by:

  • Documenting endangered languages

  • Creating bilingual dictionaries and repositories

  • Supporting real-time translation for education, healthcare, and governance

  • Promoting cultural pride among younger generations

Launched under the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, the project underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding indigenous heritage while advancing digital inclusion.

India Launches Adi Vaani: AI Translator for Tribal Languages

How Adi Vaani Works

The platform integrates cutting-edge AI models like IndicTrans2 and No Language Left Behind (NLLB), developed in partnership with premier institutes including IIT Delhi, BITS Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Nava Raipur, and Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs).

Key Functional Tools:

  • Text-to-Text & Speech-to-Speech translation

  • Text-to-Speech & Speech-to-Text conversions

  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for manuscripts

  • Subtitled content for public service messages

  • Bilingual dictionaries & cultural archives

These tools enable interactive learning, folklore preservation, and real-time communication in native languages.

Languages Covered in the Beta Phase

Adi Vaani’s rollout begins with four widely spoken tribal languages:

  • Santali (Odisha)

  • Bhili (Madhya Pradesh)

  • Mundari (Jharkhand)

  • Gondi (Chhattisgarh)

Work is underway to add Kui, Garo, and other regional dialects, ensuring broader linguistic coverage in future phases.

Empowerment Through Inclusion

Community-Centric Development

Unlike top-down technology initiatives, Adi Vaani was co-created with active involvement of tribal communities. Local speakers contributed to data collection, validation, and usability testing, ensuring cultural accuracy and trustworthiness.

Impact Areas:

  • Education → Localized learning materials for schools

  • Healthcare → Patient–doctor communication in tribal dialects

  • Governance → Access to welfare schemes and civic information

  • Public awareness → Campaigns on health, environment, and rights in local languages

The platform already supports translations for health advisories on sickle cell anemia and other public health issues.

National and Global Significance

Adi Vaani aligns with India’s flagship initiatives like Digital India, PM JANMAN, and Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. It strengthens India’s role as a global leader in AI for social equity, showing how technology can be leveraged for both innovation and inclusion.

On the global stage, the project contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Significance of Adi Vaani

  • Safeguards cultural heritage by digitizing endangered tribal languages

  • Bridges the digital divide for tribal communities

  • Promotes inclusivity in education, healthcare, and governance

  • Empowers communities to participate in India’s growth story

  • Positions India as a pioneer in AI-driven linguistic preservation

Conclusion

The launch of Adi Vaani is more than just a technological achievement—it is a cultural revolution. By ensuring that tribal voices are heard, preserved, and celebrated, India is moving closer to building an inclusive digital society.

As Adi Vaani expands to more languages, it has the potential to transform communication, preserve indigenous knowledge systems, and empower millions of tribal citizens to engage with modern India without losing touch with their roots.
