Introduction to LL.B. Course at Goalpara Law College

There shall be a 3-year Law Degree Course consisting of 6 semesters, spread over 3 academic years, following the Choice Based Credit and Grading System (CBCGS).

On successful completion, students are awarded:

  • LL.B. Degree, or

  • LL.B. (Honours) Degree

This degree is valid for advocate enrolment under the Advocates Act, 1961.


Eligibility for Admission (3-Year LL.B. Course)

A candidate is eligible to apply if:

  • He/she has graduated in any discipline from:

    • An Indian University, or

    • A foreign university recognized as equivalent to an Indian University

Distance Education Graduates

  • Candidates who obtained their first degree through distance or correspondence mode are also eligible for admission.


Age Limit for Admission

There is no minimum or maximum age limit for admission to the 3-year LL.B. course.


Admission Procedure

Admission is made strictly on merit by the College Admission Committee, following BCI and Gauhati University rules.

Admission may be conducted through:

  • Written Admission Test, or

  • Interview of candidates

Tie-Breaking Rule

  • If two or more candidates secure equal marks in the admission test, merit will be decided based on:

    • Marks obtained in the qualifying (First Degree) examination

Fee Payment Rule

  • Selected candidates must pay admission fees within the fixed date

  • Failure to do so will lead to forfeiture of admission claim

No relaxation in minimum eligibility marks is allowed.


Prohibition on Dual Course Registration

A student admitted to the 3-Year LL.B. course:

Cannot register simultaneously in:

  • Any other graduate course

  • Postgraduate course

  • Diploma or certificate course

  • Professional course (from same or any other university)

Allowed Exception

✅ Short-term part-time certificate or diploma courses in:

  • Language

  • Computer Science

  • Computer Applications

✅ Distance learning courses offered by universities are also permitted.


Minimum Marks in Qualifying Examination (BCI Rules)

As per Bar Council of India guidelines:

  • General Category: Minimum 45% marks

  • SC / ST / OBC Category: Minimum 40% marks

Attendance Rules for End-Semester Examination

To appear in the end-semester examination:

  • The Principal may allow a student with:

    • Minimum 65% attendance in a paper, and

    • 70% overall attendance across all papers

Such cases must be:

  • Properly recorded

  • Reported to the Bar Council of India


Medium of Instruction

Course Structure – Number of Papers

For 3-Year LL.B. Degree Course

Students must study:

  • 20 Compulsory Law Papers

  • 6 Optional Law Papers

  • 4 Compulsory Practical (Clinical) Law Papers


For 3-Year LL.B. (Honours) Degree Course

In addition to the above papers, students must take:

  • 8 additional law papers from any of the following Honours / Specialized Groups:

    • Constitutional Law Group

    • Crime & Criminology Group

    • Intellectual Property Law Group

    • Business Law Group

Examination and Evaluation System

The evaluation system consists of two parts:

1. Continuous Internal Assessment

  • Sessional examinations

The assessment scheme is:

  • Designed by the teacher

  • Disclosed to students at the beginning of each semester


2. End-Semester Examination

  • Conducted at the end of every semester

  • Covers the full syllabus of the paper


Timing of End-Semester Examinations

  • Odd Semester Exams: Held in December

  • Even Semester Exams: Held in June
