What are IIT Colleges?

IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology. These are autonomous public technical universities established by the Government of India. IITs are governed under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.

The main objective of IIT colleges is to provide world-class technical education and promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and scientific research.

The first IIT was established in 1951 at Kharagpur. After that, many IITs were opened across different states of India. Today, there are 23 IITs in the country.

IIT colleges are considered among the best engineering institutions in India because of:

  • Excellent academic environment

  • Highly qualified faculty

  • Modern laboratories

  • Strong placement records

  • International collaborations

  • Advanced research opportunities

  • Competitive student culture

History of IIT Colleges

The idea of establishing IIT colleges came after India gained independence. The government wanted to create institutes that could provide advanced technical education and help in nation-building.

The first IIT was established at Kharagpur in West Bengal in 1951. It was followed by IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Delhi.

Different countries supported the development of these IITs:

  • Soviet Union helped IIT Bombay

  • Germany supported IIT Madras

  • USA helped IIT Kanpur

  • United Kingdom supported IIT Delhi

Over the years, more IITs were established in different states to improve technical education across India.
