Union Cabinet Approves Semicon 2.0 with Rs. 1.27 Lakh Crore Outlay
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Semicon 2.0 programme with a total budget outlay of Rs 1,27,500 crore. This new semiconductor incentive programme aims to develop India's semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem, building on the momentum of Semicon 1.0. The programme is structured around six main pillars: Design, Machines & Materials, Setting up More Fabs, ATMP/OSAT industry, Research & Development (R&D), and Talent development.

Union Cabinet Approves Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS)
The Union Cabinet approved the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) with a budgetary outlay of Rs. 62,500 crore. Approved under the Make in India initiative, the scheme aims to strengthen domestic mobile phone manufacturing, increase value addition, boost exports, and enhance India's global competitiveness in the electronics manufacturing sector.
The service sector remains the largest contributor to India's GDP, contributing over 50% of the Gross Value Added (GVA) since 2013-14.
Railways Unveils 8 More Reforms Under 'Reform Express'
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw implemented 8 more structural reforms under the 'Reform Express' initiative, raising the total reforms under the programme to 17. These reforms are part of the Ministry of Railways' target to implement 52 reforms in 52 weeks to enhance efficiency, promote innovation and strengthen the railway ecosystem.

India Launches Campaign for UNSC Non-Permanent Seat for 2028-29 Term
Union Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar officially launched India's campaign for election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term at the UN Headquarters in New York. The campaign is themed "SHANTI: Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity", highlighting India's commitment to global peace, security, equitable development, and reformed multilateralism.
Ministry of Statistics Introduces India's First Trial Index of Services Production (ISP)
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has introduced India's first trial version of the Index of Services Production (ISP) to measure the monthly performance of the formal services sector. Launched with the base year 2024-25, the ISP provides a short-term indicator to track changes in the output of India's services economy, similar to the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).
The pilot ISP covers 19 service sub-sectors, accounting for around 60% of India's services sector. The first ISP report covering April 2026 showed strong growth, with 14 out of 19 sub-sectors recording double-digit year-on-year growth:
- Accommodation and Food Services: 37.2%
- Retail Trade: 30.8%
- Administrative and Support Services: 28.7%
- Real Estate Services: 27.7%
- Telecommunication Services: 22.8%
Two transport-related sectors witnessed a decline: Air Transport (-13.9%) and Rail Transport (-0.4%).
Centre Notifies Draft Ban on Paraquat Dichloride
The Central Government issued a draft notification proposing a nationwide prohibition on the import, manufacture, sale, transport, distribution and use of Paraquat Dichloride, a highly toxic herbicide. The proposed ban under Section 27 of the Insecticides Act, 1968, follows documented adverse health effects, repeated poisoning incidents with high fatalities, and absence of a specific antidote.
Paraquat is among the world's most toxic herbicides, causing severe lung fibrosis, kidney and liver failure, heart damage, Parkinson's disease, and often death. The chemical has already been banned or severely restricted in over 70 countries.
Supreme Court Stays Madras HC's Blanket Ban on Cow Slaughter in Tamil Nadu
The Supreme Court of India issued an interim stay on a Madras High Court directive that mandated a blanket ban on the slaughter of cows and calves in Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu government challenged the order, arguing it amounted to "judicial lawmaking" and contradicted the Tamil Nadu Animal Preservation Act, 1958, which permits slaughter of cows over 10 years of age if declared unfit.
The Supreme Court's stay reinforces the doctrine of the Separation of Powers, indicating that judicial mandates should not override active statutory mechanisms concerning animal preservation—a subject falling under Entry 15 of the State List.
India Bans Import of Goods Made Using Forced Labour
The Government of India has taken significant steps to ban the import of goods made using forced labour, aligning with international labour standards and strengthening India's commitment to ethical trade practices. This move is expected to impact supply chains and encourage domestic manufacturers to adopt fair labour practices.

RBI Proposes One-Time Approval Framework for Institutional Investors
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released a draft amendment proposing a one-time approval mechanism for eligible institutional investors to acquire and retain major shareholding (5% or more) in the same banking company without seeking repeated approvals. Under the proposed framework, prior RBI approval will continue to be mandatory for the first acquisition.
The proposal applies to Commercial Banks, Small Finance Banks (SFBs), Payments Banks, and Local Area Banks (LABs). Investors must inform both RBI and the concerned bank within one day whenever their aggregate shareholding crosses above or falls below the 5% threshold.

Indian Mercantile Co-operative Bank Removed from RBI Second Schedule
Indian Mercantile Co-operative Bank Limited, Lucknow has been excluded from the Second Schedule of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act, 1934, through a notification dated 4 June 2026. With its removal from the Second Schedule, the bank loses its status as a Scheduled Bank and will no longer enjoy privileges including access to RBI refinance facilities, participation in monetary policy operations, and liquidity support mechanisms.
RBI Organises 3rd Annual Internal Ombudsmen Conference in Mumbai
The Reserve Bank of India organised the 3rd Annual Conference of Internal Ombudsmen (IO) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The conference brought together Internal Ombudsmen from various Regulated Entities (REs), including Banks, NBFCs, Credit Information Companies (CICs), and other regulated institutions.
Deputy Governor Shri Swaminathan J. delivered the keynote address, urging Internal Ombudsmen to ensure meaningful, fair, and effective resolution of customer complaints, identify recurring issues, conduct root cause analysis, and recommend remedial measures.
India's Q1 FY27 Exports Reach USD 232.73 Billion
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry released India's Trade Data for Quarter 1 (April-June) of Financial Year 2026-27 (FY27). India's total exports during Q1 FY27 stood at USD 232.73 billion, while total imports were estimated at USD 270.15 billion.
- Merchandise exports: USD 129.32 billion (up from USD 111.57 billion in Q1 FY26)
- Service exports: USD 103.41 billion (up from USD 97.41 billion in Q1 FY26)
- Merchandise imports: USD 216.18 billion (up from USD 180.31 billion in Q1 FY26)

India-UK CETA Comes into Force
The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between India and the United Kingdom came into effect on 15 July 2026, marking a major milestone in bilateral economic and trade relations. The agreement aims to increase bilateral trade to USD 100 billion by 2030 from the current level of around USD 55-60 billion.
The agreement provides safeguards for India's automobile industry, with no tariff concessions for Electric Vehicles (EVs) during the first five years.
India Achieves Milestones at 49th Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49)
India achieved significant milestones at the 49th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49) held in Geneva, Switzerland. Seven Codex standards and guidelines developed under India's chairmanship and co-chairmanship were officially adopted.
Under India's chairmanship, the Commission adopted Codex Standards for Dried Coriander Seeds and Fresh Curry Leaves. Under India's co-chairmanship, five Codex texts were adopted, including Standards for Vanilla and Large Cardamom, Guidelines for Safe Use and Reuse of Water in Food Production, and Guidelines for Control of Campylobacter and Salmonella in Chicken Meat.
India was also elected as Co-Chair of the Electronic Working Group on New Food Sources and Production Systems (NFPS).
First Round of India-Maldives FTA Negotiations Concludes Successfully
The first round of negotiations for the India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA) concluded successfully. Maldives, located to the southwest of India and separated by the Eight Degree Channel, is home to the 7th largest coral reef system in the world. This FTA will strengthen economic ties between the two nations and enhance maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

World LNG Report 2026 Released by International Gas Union
The International Gas Union (IGU) released the World LNG Report 2026. Global LNG trade reached a record 437 million tonnes in 2025, registering a 6.3% increase. India added 52.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG regasification capacity across eight terminals, surpassing Spain to become the 4th largest LNG regasification market globally in 2025.

Karnataka to Establish India's First Government-Driven AI University
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that the state will establish India's first government-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) University during Google I/O Connect India 2026 held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Bengaluru. The initiative aims to position Karnataka as an "AI-native State".
The proposed AI University will serve as a centre of excellence for developing world-class AI talent, promoting advanced AI research, encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, and strengthening collaboration among academia, industry, and government. Alongside the university, the Karnataka Government will establish an AI Hub to promote AI research, startup incubation, and industry collaboration.
MeitY and DFI Launch NIDAR 2.0 for Indigenous Drone Innovation
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in partnership with the Drone Federation India (DFI), launched the 2nd edition of the National Innovation Challenge for Drone Application and Research (NIDAR 2.0) for 2026-27 under the SwaYaan Initiative. A key highlight is the integration of the indigenously developed VEGA Processor under the Digital India RISC-V (DIR-V) Programme.
The competition offers a prize pool of over Rs 65 lakh, along with corporate internships, startup incubation support, cloud computing credits, and mentorship. The first edition attracted 3,448 students from 22 States and 4 UTs.
TDB Supports Indigenous C-Phycocyanin Production Using Spirulina
The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology extended financial assistance to M/s K. N. Biosciences (India) Private Limited, Hyderabad for producing C-Phycocyanin, a natural blue pigment, using Spirulina sp. as a Cell Factory. The technology was developed by IIT Guwahati using an indigenous Spirulina strain (NCIM 5143).
This initiative reduces India's dependence on imported natural colourants and supports the vision of Bioeconomy, Sustainable Manufacturing, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
India Launches Online Portal for Coal Exchanges Registration
Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy launched the Online Portal Application for Registration of Coal Exchanges in New Delhi. A Coal Exchange is an online trading platform where buyers and sellers of coal can undertake delivery-based coal contracts.
The initiative, enabled through the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2025, represents a paradigm shift to a modern, transparent, competitive, and technology-driven coal market. Registrations will remain valid for 25 years.

Tamil Nadu CM Launches "Nalam TN" AI-Powered WhatsApp Chatbot for Healthcare
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched "Nalam TN", an integrated digital platform designed to provide fast and remote Outpatient (OP) registration and appointments at government hospitals across the state. The AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot enables users to book appointments remotely, eliminating physical registration queues.
For the initial phase, the platform is live in 22 districts, including Chennai and Chengalpattu. The Tamil Nadu Health Foundation (Nalam TN) portal was also launched, enabling individuals and corporates to transparently sponsor medical equipment or donate directly to specific government hospitals. Healthcare infrastructure worth Rs 139.47 crore was inaugurated, and appointment orders were handed over to over 2,000 newly recruited healthcare professionals.
Madhya Pradesh Secures USD 2 Billion Semiconductor Investment from Spain's Submer
Spain-based Submer Group, a technology company specialising in sustainable data centre cooling solutions, announced an investment of USD 2 billion (around Rs 19,000 crore) in Madhya Pradesh's semiconductor sector. The investment was announced during the MP Tech Growth Conclave 3.0: GCC - Data Centres and Semiconductors held in Bhopal.
Gujarat Forest Department Successfully Reintroduces Indian Grey Hornbill to Gir
The Gujarat Forest Department has successfully reintroduced the Indian Grey Hornbill to the Gir Forest, marking the return of the species after an absence of more than 60 years. The species had disappeared during the 1950s-1960s primarily due to hunting pressure.
Scientific assessments confirmed that the reintroduced hornbills have survived, established permanent territories, adapted to the habitat, and successfully bred for four consecutive breeding seasons. A total of 40 Indian Grey Hornbills were released in two phases (28 in 2021-22 and 12 in 2023). The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Birds.
Korku Tribe Demands Removal of Encroachments in Madhya Pradesh
The indigenous Korku community of Madhya Pradesh has demanded the forest department and district administration to remove encroachments from forest lands. The Korkus belong to the Munda or Kolarian group and are mostly found in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the adjoining Melghat region of Maharashtra.
Korku is one of the languages termed endangered by UNESCO. The tribe has a long-standing system of self-governance called 'Chavadi Swashasan'.

Indian Navy to Host Operation Southern Readiness 26-2 at Kochi
The Indian Navy will host Operation Southern Readiness 26-2 at the Southern Naval Command, Kochi (Kerala) from 20-23 July 2026 as a four-day multinational maritime training engagement. The exercise will be conducted in partnership with the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) under Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154).
The training programme will include classroom instruction, simulator-based training, and hands-on practical training covering Maritime Law, Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), Counter-Narcotics Operations, Force Protection, Asymmetric Threats, and Maritime Uncrewed Systems. Participants will also receive practical training in Damage Control, Firefighting, and Survival at Sea.

R. Vairamuthu Conferred 60th Jnanpith Award (2025)
Tamil poet, lyricist, and writer R. Vairamuthu was conferred the 60th Jnanpith Award (2025), India's highest literary honour, at a ceremony held in New Delhi. The award was presented by Dr. Karan Singh in recognition of Vairamuthu's outstanding contribution to Tamil literature.
With this honour, R. Vairamuthu became the third Tamil writer from Tamil Nadu to receive the Jnanpith Award, after a gap of 24 years. Previous Tamil recipients are Akilan (1975) and Jayakanthan (2002). The award carries a cash prize of Rs 11 lakh, a bronze statue of Goddess Vagdevi (Saraswati), and a citation.
His acclaimed novel Kallikattu Ithikasam received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2003.

Delhi Unveils 'Mayur' as Official Mascot for 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta unveiled 'Mayur', the official mascot of the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship 2026, at a special ceremony in New Delhi. The championship will be held from 27 July to 2 August 2026 at the Thyagraj Stadium, New Delhi.
The championship is expected to witness participation from over 35 Commonwealth countries. 'Mayur' is inspired by the Indian Peacock, the National Bird of India, and reflects the values of unity, friendship, cultural diversity, sportsmanship, and international cooperation. The mascot's colourful feathers incorporate elements of the flags of participating Commonwealth nations.
The championship is being jointly organised by the Delhi Government and the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI).
