The Chair on Consumer Law and Practice (CLAP) at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) organizes initiatives to promote discourse and scholarship in the field of consumer law and policy.

About the National Essay Competition

The 4th National Essay Competition 2026 commemorates National Consumer Day, observed on December 24.

The competition aims to stimulate interest among students, academics, professionals and consumer advocates in contemporary and seminal issues concerning consumer protection.

Participants are invited to submit original, well-researched and analytically sound essays that contribute to ongoing discussions surrounding consumer rights in India.

Essay Themes

Participants may write on any of the following suggested themes:

  1. Consumer Protection in the Age of Artificial Intelligence and Algorithmic Decision-Making
  2. Dark Patterns, Drip Pricing and Manipulative Design in E-Commerce
  3. Cross-Border Consumer Protection in Digital Trade
  4. Consumer Rights in the Gig and Platform Economy
  5. Data Privacy as a Consumer Protection Concern
  6. Children and Young Consumers in the Digital Age
  7. Digital Payments, Online Financial Fraud and Cybersecurity for Consumers
  8. Consumer Protection in Healthcare, Pharma and Telemedicine
  9. Sustainable Consumption and the Case Against Greenwashing
  10. Access to Consumer Justice: e-Daakhil, Mediation and the Three-Tier Commission System
Other Topics: Participants may also choose other relevant topics within the broad consumer protection theme, provided there is a clear connection to consumer law and policy.

Eligibility

The competition is open to:

  • Students interested in consumer law and policy.
  • Academics.
  • Legal and other professionals.
  • Consumer advocates.
Participants should have an interest in contemporary and seminal issues concerning consumer protection.

Submission Guidelines

Participants are required to submit an original essay critically examining an issue related to consumer protection.

  • The essay should be original.
  • The submission should critically examine a consumer protection issue.
  • Essays should be well-researched and analytically sound.
  • The essay should have clear relevance to consumer law and policy.
  • Participants should follow the formatting and referencing requirements specified in the official brochure.
