What is UGC NET Exam?

The UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) is a national-level exam conducted in India to determine the eligibility of candidates for the role of Assistant Professor and/or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) awards in Indian universities and colleges. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The UGC NET exam covers a broad range of subjects across humanities, social sciences, and other fields, such as English, Commerce, Management, and Environmental Science, among others. The purpose of the test is to ensure that a standard of quality is maintained in the teaching profession and research and to uphold the minimum standards for entrants in the teaching profession and research field.

The exam consists of two papers, both of which are objective type and conducted in a single three-hour session. Paper 1 assesses the teaching and research aptitude, reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness of the candidate. Paper 2 is based on the subject selected by the candidate, focusing on domain knowledge and subject-specific expertise.

Candidates who qualify for the Assistant Professor role are not subjected to the age limit, whereas there is an age limit for candidates applying for the JRF.

UGC NET Exam Fees 2024

  • For General/ Unreserved: Rs. 1150/-
  • For Other Backward Classes (OBC) – (NCL)/ Economically Weaker Section (EWS): Rs. 600/-
  • For SC/ ST/ PwD/ Third Gender: Rs. 325/-
  • Pay fee using the Payment Gateway(s) integrated to the Online Application through Net Banking, Debit Card/ Credit Card / UPI

UGC NET Age Limit

  • For JRF: Not more than 30 years as on 1st day of the month in which the examination is concluded i.e. 01-06-2024
  • For Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit in applying for UGC-NET for Assistant Professor.
  • Age relaxation is applicable as per rules.

UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2024

Candidates should Possess Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC.

Minimum Marks in Master's Degree:

General/Unreserved/General-EWS Candidates: Must have secured at least 55% marks in Master's Degree or equivalent in subjects like Humanities, Social Science, Computer Science, and Applications, Electronic Science, etc., recognized by UGC.

OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/Third Gender Candidates: Must have secured at least 50% marks in the same.

Candidates currently pursuing their Master’s degree or who have appeared for their final year Master’s degree exam and are awaiting results can apply.

Such candidates will be admitted provisionally and will be considered for JRF/Assistant Professor eligibility only after passing their Master’s degree with the required marks.

Completion Requirement for Provisional Candidates:

Provisional candidates must complete their Master’s degree within two years of the NET result date with the required marks; failure to do so will result in disqualification.

UGC NET Exam Pattern 2024

The UGC NET June 2024 exam will be conducted using an OMR-based format across various cities in the country. Here are the main details of the exam format and structure:

Mode of Examination: The exam will be OMR-based, meaning candidates will fill out optical mark recognition sheets for their answers.

Pattern of Examination: There are two papers in the exam:

Paper I: Consists of 50 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and carries 100 marks. This paper tests the candidate's teaching and research aptitude, assessing areas like reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness.

Paper II: Includes 100 MCQs, carrying 200 marks, based on the subject selected by the candidate. This paper focuses on assessing domain-specific knowledge.

Duration: The total duration for both papers is 180 minutes (3 hours) without any break between them.

Medium of Question Paper: The question papers will be available in both English and Hindi, except for language-specific papers. Candidates must select their preferred language medium when filling out the application form, and this choice cannot be changed later.

Marking Scheme:

  • Each question is worth 2 marks.
  • Correct answers will earn 2 marks.
  • There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
  • Questions left unanswered or marked for review will not receive any marks.
  • If a question is incorrect or ambiguous and is subsequently dropped, 2 marks will be awarded to those candidates who attempted it.

Syllabus and Subjects: The syllabus for all subjects can be downloaded from the UGC website, and candidates can find the list of subjects and their codes in Appendix -II of the exam notification.
