India's National Space Commission has approved its fifth lunar mission, known as the Lunar Polar Exploration Mission (Lupex). This mission, in collaboration with Japan's space agency, JAXA, aims to explore the Moon's south pole and search for vital resources like water. Lupex is part of India’s larger lunar program, intended to enhance its capabilities for future human lunar landings.

A Collaborative Effort with JAXA

Lupex is a joint project between ISRO and the Japanese space agency, JAXA. The mission will combine ISRO’s technological expertise in lunar landings with JAXA's rover technology. The lander, developed by ISRO, will deploy a rover built by JAXA to study the polar regions of the Moon.

Key Objectives of Lupex

The primary objective of Lupex is to search for water and other essential resources at the Moon's poles, which are considered potential sites for future lunar bases. This will help in enabling long-term human exploration of the Moon. Another significant aspect of this mission is to further develop India’s technical abilities for lunar surface exploration, preparing the nation for future manned missions.

Building on Chandrayaan Success

Lupex builds upon India’s previous lunar missions, particularly the successes of Chandrayaan-3, which achieved a soft landing on the Moon. The technologies and lessons learned from this mission will help guide Lupex, making it a more advanced and ambitious lunar exploration project. 

The re-engineered spacecraft will also feature a new lander engine developed by ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, essential for future human missions.

Future Lunar Missions

Alongside Lupex, ISRO is developing Chandrayaan-4, with both missions proceeding in parallel. ISRO’s chairman, S. Somanath, also indicated that Chandrayaan-5 is on the horizon, further expanding India’s lunar exploration portfolio. The approval of Lupex solidifies India’s plans to become a leading player in lunar science and space exploration.
